The 9 Steps to Sufficiency: The Foundation of Earth Safe Standards

Updated: 6 days ago

The Earth Safe Standard (Thai Organic Way) is a hallmark of the "King's Philosophy"—a standard for the Kingdom of Thailand that views life as a house requiring a solid foundation. Before advancing, one must build a stable base using the 9 Steps to Sufficiency theory.

The Foundation: Steps 1–4 (Survival and Stability)

  1. Food Security: The first success is conquering hunger. A household must have safe, reliable food for consumption.

  2. Basic Necessities: Having essential consumer goods and production inputs, such as organic fertilizers and herbal extracts for farming.

  3. Stable Housing: Designing and building a home and living space that can withstand natural disasters.

  4. Environmental Harmony: Creating a cooling environment by planting "3 Types of Forests for 4 Types of Benefits." This includes edible plants, timber, and large trees, which result in the fourth benefit: abundant nature, clean air, moisture, and natural biodiversity.

The Advanced Stages: Steps 5–9 (Growth and Sustainability)

  1. Spiritual Progression: Practicing gratitude toward parents, teachers, and the land (water and forest). Avoiding the exploitation of nature for personal gain.

  2. Giving and Sharing: Sacrificing and helping others. The more you give, the more you receive. Sharing knowledge and happiness creates a stronger community.

  3. Preservation: Storing and processing food using local wisdom to survive droughts or floods.

  4. Valued Trade: Increasing product value by telling meaningful stories. This encourages "conscious consumption" through branding that focuses on social impact rather than just maximum profit.

  5. Networking: Not working in isolation. Collaboration through love and unity across all sectors creates the power needed to achieve sustainable activities.

A Global Standard for a Sustainable Future

The Earth Safe Standard has spread across Thailand, engaging the academic, government, and private sectors. This movement has fostered the "Earth Safe Family," a network providing standards, marketing, and consumer education from the highlands to the sea.

By applying the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy of King Rama IX, this Thai standard aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Earth Safe is now expanding into ASEAN countries like Malaysia and China, proving that Thai wisdom is a globally recognized standard. We do not need foreign entities to certify our products; instead, we invite the world to have faith in our nation's sustainable practices.
