Scent Designer: The Artist Behind the Fragrance
How familiar are you with the profession of Scent Designer? Many people may not be too familiar with the name of this career, yet their work is all around us something we encounter every single day. Whether it's soap, shampoo, or various fragranced products, these individuals are behind them all.
The Scent Designer, or Fragrance Designer, is an artist with the ability to translate abstract concepts and emotions through the blending of aromatic substances and various components, resulting in a unique fragrance. Their creations can be called a Signature Scent, a specific scent that distinctively captures an identity, instantly evoking a memory or impression, and effectively communicating a unique persona. The act of perfume compounding is akin to creating a work of art. A fragrance that has been skillfully composed can generate happiness, much like listening to music or viewing a painting. This is because every bottle of perfume possesses its own distinctive scent—a fragrance that inspires imagination like music and has tangible elements like a painting.

The Science of Perfume Compounding: Designing a Unique Scent
The pervasive scent is no different from musical notes; when notes are composed with rhythm, they create beautiful music. Similarly, a perfectly composed fragrance can create a lasting impression on those around you. Today, we will take everyone on a deep dive into the world of perfume, exploring the techniques of scent compounding used by the Junior Scent Designers at Scent And Sense.
The perfumers in Thailand are few in number. Boontariya Jampatong (Patty) and Pannawat Ditpheing (Best), two experienced fragrance compounders who have blended countless aromas, shared their unique techniques for scent compounding. Before starting anything, one must become familiar with it, and the same is true for scent compounding. You must familiarize yourself with each aromatic substance, which is categorized into groups, understanding the unique characteristics of each category. For example, the ‘C’ category is for Citrus, yielding tart notes like orange and lime.
Essential Skills of the Perfumer

After becoming familiar with the scent categories, the next step is to learn the character of the scent and memorize its unique differences. For instance, the tone of rose scent does not merely convey the emotion of a rose, but can also convey the feeling of musical genres like Heavy Metal or Rock Metal. Above all, memory and recording are crucial. Both compounders maintain their own specialized 'Dictionary' a database for the scent tones and characteristics. This is necessary because two different substances, when smelled, might only elicit a similar imaginative picture.
After familiarizing themselves with each aromatic substance, the next step is to compound the scent according to the given Concept.
Patty's Approach to the Brief: Boontariya Jampatong (Patty) begins by interpreting the brief through scent. For example, in a "Flower Garden" Concept, she breaks down the components: it must contain the smell of earth, the fragrance of flowers, the scent of grass, and the lightness of the wind. She uses her familiarity to select and blend each aromatic substance to achieve a unique scent in her own style.
Best's Approach to the Brief: Pannawat Ditpheing (Best) interprets the brief by visualizing images and colors. For a "Bedroom Essential Oil" Concept, he starts by finding inspiration through images he likes and researching what the atmosphere of a bedroom should be. He begins with his own preference—for instance, Best personally prefers a dark, cool, quiet bedroom. He then selects aromatic substances that match the desired character, blending them to create a unique fragrance that reflects his own style.
Unique Creations: When Scent Design is Pure Joy
Compounding a single scent yields a result that is as aesthetically pleasing as creating a single work of art. However, achieving it requires a blend of emotion and imagination to ensure the final product is perfect and complete. After speaking with both of them, who would have thought that the sweet scent of a rose could also convey the feel of Rock Metal music? We can see that both compounders use different methods to interpret the brief, and their overall perspectives differ. This is undoubtedly why the fragrances they compound possess a unique individuality that no one can imitate
