Floral Fragrance Extraction: Absolute, The Pure Extract from Jasmine
What comes to mind when you think of jasmine? Many may think of it as a symbol for Mother’s Day or recall the scent of fragrant garlands. However, there is another aspect of jasmine that holds far greater meaning and value. It is a source of livelihood for communities and increases the value of the flower by hundreds of times.
Adding value to jasmine is not limited to stringing garlands; it can also be used to extract perfume from flowers to create a concentrated extract known as Absolute. Absolute is a pure oil extracted from flowers or natural plants that has not undergone any further modification, resulting in a very high concentration. (This differs from pure Essential Oil, which is obtained through steam distillation.) Jasmine is an important plant used for extracting this exceptional fragrant substance.

Absolute: Pure Floral Extract and Its Market Value
Using flowers for essential oil extraction not only increases the value of the raw material but also transforms agricultural produce, preventing spoilage and extending its utility over time. According to a 2017 USA market survey, the demand for essential oil extracted from jasmine was as high as 2.5 tons, and it is projected that by 2024, the demand will increase by 176%, or 4.4 tons. For example, Egyptian jasmine, when extracted into essential oil, can be valued up to 3,200 US dollars per 1 kilogram, or approximately 110,000 Thai Baht.
Cultivation and Meticulous Harvesting
Essential oil extraction in India, renowned as the world's largest expert producer of floral essential oils, features jasmine as a key fragrant plant that locals have expertly cultivated, cared for, and harvested for hundreds of years. Only two varieties among the 80 jasmine species in India command a good market price: Double Jasmine (Jasmine Sambac) and Jasmine Grandiflorum.
The cultivation and harvesting process requires meticulous selection and skill from the collectors. The crucial harvesting time is dawn every day, as the jasmine must be picked while still in its bud stage. If the jasmine blooms, the pervasive fragrance will disappear within 1-2 days, rendering the flowers unusable. Harvesting must be done very carefully and gently to prevent bruising the petals, requiring over 5 hours to collect approximately 5,000 buds, or about 1 kilogram.
The Process of Extracting Jasmine Perfume
Once the jasmine buds reach the factory, workers must quickly spread them out in an open area to dissipate heat and prevent bruising or spoilage. As the buds begin to open and release their scent, they are prepared for the extraction process—a race against time. If the jasmine is left too long, its delicate aroma will instantly turn pungent, meaning the flowers can no longer be used.
The extraction process to obtain the essential oil involves passing the jasmine through a press soaked with a solvent, yielding a fragrant waxy residue called Concrete. The next step is to extract the fragrant substance from the concrete using alcohol as a separating agent, before filtering it to obtain the final concentrated fragrant oil called Absolute
Benefits of Floral Fragrance Extraction in the Perfume Industry
The essential oil obtained from jasmine extraction provides a unique, sweet fragrance and a moisturizing sensation. It blends exceptionally well with fragrant substances extracted from other plants. Furthermore, jasmine scent is attributed with properties that help stimulate the nervous system, alleviate headaches, reduce stress, relieve muscle pain, and ease menstrual pain, making it widely used in Aromatherapy to balance the body, mind, emotions, and spirit.
Jasmine fragrance is also a popular component in global perfumery, featuring in famous brand fragrances. For instance, Flora by Gucci Glorious Mandarin uses jasmine extract blended with orange notes, which are the main notes in the perfume. Another example is Christian Dior - Jasmine Des Anges, a jasmine perfume blended with apricot notes, preventing the scent from becoming overly sweet.
