Planting Hope – Generating Income from Thai Herbs

Scent and Sense and the Mission to Improve Community Livelihoods. In many parts of Thailand, especially rural areas, local villagers possess valuable traditional knowledge. One of the most treasured areas of this wisdom is their deep understanding of Thai herbs and aromatic plants, passed down through generations. They know how to cultivate, care for, harvest, and make use of these plants in various ways.

However, what many of these communities still lack is access to wider markets. They often do not have systematic sales channels, lack knowledge in processing and packaging, do not meet marketable product standards, and most importantly, lack connections to buyers who offer fair prices.

At Scent and Sense, we believe that businesses can drive meaningful social change. This belief led us to initiate a community-based economic development project. We work directly with local communities in several provinces—Phrae, Chiang Rai, and Buriram—to help transform their local herbs into a sustainable and stable source of income.

Here’s what we’ve done to support these communities

1. Promoting Organic Herb Cultivation

We provide training on how to grow herbs without chemical fertilizers or pesticides, and offer guidance on how to manage agricultural plots for higher-quality yields that are safe for consumers and environmentally friendly.

2. Training in Processing and Packaging

We invite farmers to join hands-on workshops where they learn techniques like drying herbs, extracting essential oils, storing raw materials properly, and choosing the right packaging—transforming simple raw materials into high-value products.

3. Buying Raw Materials at Fair Prices

Unlike traditional middlemen, we buy directly from farmers at above-market prices. This ensures that community members receive fair compensation and a stable income, helping them plan for the future with confidence.

Since the launch of our initiative, we’ve seen truly encouraging results:

• Farmer incomes have increased by an average of 30–50% per year

• Villagers have organized into community enterprises, managing their products and finances systematically

• Communities have become stronger. Fewer people are forced to migrate to the cities because they can now earn a living from their own hometowns

All of this is part of our larger mission to support. We don’t believe that solving poverty means simply making donations. Instead, we believe in providing opportunities, skills, and sustainable income channels.
